Shangri La Nature Center

Picture 15The Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center is the first project in Texas and only the 50th project in the world to earn a LEED Platinum certification for new construction. The project began with the land, which included restoration of natural areas, a wetland purification system, and locating the majority of the new buildings and infrastructure along the site’s perimeter. Many of the structures float above the land on corkscrew foundations that can be removed in the future. Other sustainable practices that were incorporated include rainwater collection, geothermal heating and cooling, re-use of existing greenhouse structures, recycled and reclaimed materials use, reflective roofing and paving surfaces, over 77% water use reduction, 21% of energy from solar panels, 79% construction waste diversion and extensive daylighting.

Kathy was the LEED Coordinator for The Beck Group for preconstruction services that started at the beginning of design and throughout construction until Substantial Completion (a 3 ½ year timeframe!).
